In Somalia, bill legalizing early marriages sparks outcry






Somalia is ranked tenth among the countries in the world for the number of child marriages.
There is no law prescribing a minimum age for marriage in Somalia. But a new bill would allow child marriage to adults. It triggers much criticism and anger among those who fight for the improvement of the living conditions of children.
In Mogadishu, in a refugee camp where families flee famine and Shebab jihadists live, photographer Feisal Omar met several young girls who were married, got pregnant, abused… while they were minors.

Heavy fighting erupts in Somali town near Kenyan border

  Heavy fighting broke out overnight in a Somali town near the Kenyan border between Somali forces and those from the state of Jubbaland, as Somalia’s election troubles spill over into violence. Somalia’s information ministry in a statement early Monday accused Kenya-funded rebels of crossing into the town of Bulo Hawo and attacking Somali forces. But the Jubbaland vice president, Mohamud Sayid Adan, told reporters that Jubbaland forces stationed outside the town were attacked by what he called forces recently deployed to the region by the government in the capital, Mogadishu. Both sides claimed victory. The information ministry asserted that Somali forces were in control of the town and that nearly 100 of the suspected rebels had surrendered to Somali forces. Court dismisses petition to bar Kenya from ICJ case with Somalia

Court dismisses petition that noted the consequences of a ruling in Somalia's favour. A three-judge bench has dismissed a petition to bar Kenyan officials from participating before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a maritime dispute with Somalia. Justices Kanyi Kimondo, Robert Limo and Anthony Mrima noted on Friday that issues raised in the petition by 20 Kenyans would be more effectively resolved through diplomatic, legislative, policy and other executive interventions, rather than by a constitutional decision. The petitioners had argued that the Attorney-General's participation in the case would amount to ceding Kenya’s sovereignty. Through lawyer Kibe Mungai, they said Kenya risked forfeiting part of its territory if the ICJ ruled in Somalia's favour.
