Somali states welcome Senate’s call for urgent meeting on 2020/2021 polls

Somalia’s Puntland and Jubbaland regional states have announced the failure of a meeting between the federal government and federal member states.
The meeting, which was held via video conference, was to discuss and agree on the date for holding a consultative forum between the leaders of the federal government and those of federal member states.
In two separate statements, the two states also announced that they would no longer be part of the meeting of the Secretariat as the regional states and the federal governments have failed to agree on anything.
Both Jubbaland and Puntland accused the Office of the President of being an obstacle to the two sides reaching an agreement and for the disagreements on the time and place of the conference.
The two sides also welcomed the call by the Upper House of Parliament to hold an urgent consultative forum in which federal government leaders, regional states and political stakeholders will participate before 25th June to discuss the political transition process and the 2020/2021 elections.
Jubbaland also welcomed the recent remarks by Prime Minister Ali Hassan Kheyre in which he promised to hold an inclusive elections on time.
For its part, Puntland accused the leaders of the federal government of not responding to their invitations to them and to leaders of the regional states for a consultative forum to discuss the political transition process and the 2020/2021 elections.
Puntland also accused the federal government of turning down a request by its president Said Abdullahi Deni to visit Mogadishu to discuss the consultative conference.
Puntland warned that it would not be part of any consultative meeting that would be held after the 27th June when parliament will listen to the report of the National Elections Commission.
Meanwhile, HirShabelle State of Somalia has welcomed the statement by the Standing Committee of the Upper House of Parliament in which it called for an urgent meeting of the federal government, federal member states and political stakeholders before 25th June to discuss the political transition process and the 2020/2021 elections.
“HirShabelle regional state welcomes the press statement issued by the Standing Committee of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia on 9th June. We support their right thinking which is to be mindful of the Somali people who are facing many challenges. We agree with the committee that we prioritise the national interests of the people over any other personal interests,” a statement from the Office of Hirshabelle state president read in part.
The opposition Forum for National Parties, led by former presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Wadajir Part leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame have also welcomed the Senate committee’s statement in separate statements.
